Departments

Medical Microbiology

Microbiology department at Realab tests for microorganisms such as bacteria, fungi, and parasites to diagnose and guide antimicrobial therapy in patients with infectious diseases. The laboratory also assists Infection Control and Prevention to contain and prevent further spread of infectious diseases.

Haematology

Hematology is the study of blood and blood disorders. Hematologists and hematopathologists are highly trained healthcare providers who specialize in diseases of the blood and blood components. These include blood and bone marrow cells. Hematological tests can help diagnose anemia, infection, hemophilia, blood-clotting disorders, and leukemia.

Microbiology

Microbiology is the study of microorganisms including algae, bacteria, fungi, protozoa and viruses. Any bodily fluid or tissue can be cultured for infectious disease. Once bacteria grows in culture, it can be tested against many different antibiotics to find the most effective for fighting the infection while limiting opportunities for antibiotic resistance.

Clinical chemistry

Clinical chemistry is the biochemical analysis of body fluids in support of the diagnosis and treatment of diseases and conditions. Testing in this specialty utilizes chemical reactions to identify or quantify levels of chemical compounds in bodily fluids focusing on quantitative tests of important compounds, referred to as analytes or markers, in bodily fluids and tissues using analytical techniques and specialized instruments. Common tests analyzed in the chemistry laboratory are glucose, cholesterol, BUN, creatinine, potassium, liver and heart enzymes, thyroid tests and hormone tests, and PSA.

Histopathology

Histopathology is performed by a specialist doctor, called a pathologist, who examines tissue under a microscope. Pathologists study samples of tissue in a lab. Pathologists process and cut tissue into very thin layers, called sections. Then, they stain and examine it with a microscope. Using a microscope, they can observe and document the tissue's details.

Cytology

Cytopathology is a diagnostic technique that examines cells that have been exfoliated (shed), scraped from the body or aspirated with a fine needle. Cell specimens are processed into slides and examined microscopically for the diagnosis of cancer, precancerous conditions, benign tumors and some infectious conditions. Realab also offers sample collection of both Gynea and non-Gynae samples at our facility.

Frequently Asked Questions

Have questions about Testing.com or laboratory testing? We’re here to help. If you can’t find an answer to your question below or in the articles on this site, please Contact Us.

  • Why are lab tests important?

Laboratory tests are among the most common and important tools of modern medicine. Results from clinical laboratory tests contribute to the majority of health care decisions. They provide information about your health status and risk factors and can be used to determine a diagnosis, guide therapy, and estimate outlook (prognosis). Many of the decisions you and your health care provider make about your care are based on results of laboratory tests.

  • Are lab tests accurate?

Lab tests offer quite a high degree of accuracy when it comes to diagnosis and patient care. Medical testing that takes place in certified laboratories is performed by trained professionals and follows rigorous quality assurance standards with extensive oversight. You can trust the data generated by today’s exacting medical tests. However, test results are most reliable when used in conjunction with other meaningful information, such as your medical family history physical exam and other relevant diagnostic interventions. Additionally, there should be open communication between you and your doctor or other members of your health care team to help make the right diagnosis of your healthcare needs .

  • What does a routine blood test check for? What does routine lab work include?

Typically, “routine blood testing” or “routine lab work” refers to panels of tests that measure several analytes to check your general health status. Two of the most common are a comprehensive metabolic panel (CMP), which measures 14 analytes to check the health of organs such as your liver and kidneys, and a complete blood count (CBC), which evaluates your blood cells to check for conditions like anemia or infections. Other, more specific types of panels can be used as a routine check of the health of your liver, kidneys, endocrine and crucial systems of the body.

  • Can cancer be detected with a blood test?

Blood tests cannot definitively tell whether or not a person has cancer. However, some blood cancers may be detected if there are abnormal findings on a complete blood count (CBC). Additional tests, such as a bone marrow biopsy, are performed to confirm the diagnosis. For other types of cancers, your health care provider may order testing if it is suspected that you have cancer. Typically, other procedures, such as a physical exam, imaging tests, and a biopsy, are necessary to help make a diagnosis. For more details, read the guide on Tumor Markers.

  • Can a blood test detect other specific conditions like heart, liver, or kidney problems?

A blood test may provide clues to health problems, like heart or kidney conditions. However, initial test results that are abnormal are usually followed by additional testing that can help make a definitive diagnosis. Additionally, other tests may be performed to determine the cause of the condition so that it may be treated appropriately.

  • How much does a lab test cost?

There are many factors that determine the cost of a lab test, including the type of test, where the test is performed, and if you have insurance coverage. When prescribed by a doctor, testing is often covered if you have insurance, but you may still have a copay or deductible. Check with your doctor and insurance plan about the cost of your test. If you plan to order testing through our state of art laboratory, you can view the total cost of the test before purchasing.
